This might stir up some feelings, and frankly, I hope it does. I’m saying it out loud and will continue to do so. For clarity, I’m not a Swiftie—I’m just a dad and a passionate football fan.

I’m deeply disappointed with the way some people think that not being a fan gives them a free pass to disparage someone. Here’s a crucial reminder: your children are watching.

They see you grumble about Taylor Swift attending a football game, enjoying herself, and supporting someone she cares about in what seems to be a positive and respectful relationship. They see you criticize her for simply being joyful and existing.

And let’s not forget—Taylor Swift has won 324 awards. How many have you won? She’s contributed $5 billion in consumer spending and has had such a positive impact on the U.S. economy that global leaders are eager for her to perform in their countries.

Did you know that over 20 college courses are dedicated to her artistry, lyricism, and musical talent at esteemed institutions like Harvard, Stanford, and UC Berkeley? Did you know she makes substantial donations to local food banks in every city she visits?

Here’s something else you might not be aware of: Taylor Swift was sexually assaulted by a radio DJ, and she stood up to him, leading to his dismissal. When he audaciously sued her for defamation, she counter-sued for a symbolic $1. She fought for two years to make it clear that standing up for what’s right is invaluable and that silence in the face of injustice is unacceptable.

If you still don’t care, maybe it’s time you should.

Because your daughters, nieces, and nephews are observing you express disdain towards a woman who has made a significant positive impact, simply because she’s in your line of sight.

We can do better. Teach your sons to respect women. Teach your daughters they have every right to occupy space in this world. Be mindful of your words—they carry weight.

The choices we make in these everyday moments shape the future for our children. Choose to be better
