Rare Royal Detail: Kate Middleton Uses “Catherine” Signature and Solo Cypher on New Letter

In a letter issued for The Forward Trust’s “Taking Action on Addiction” campaign (marking Addiction Awareness Week), Princess Catherine signed off simply as “Catherine” — her first name — rather than using a more formal title.

Even more noteworthy: at the top of the letterhead appeared her solo royal cypher — a small gold-stamped “C” topped with a crown, indicating the personal monogram belonging to her office at Kensington Palace. This type of cypher is rarely displayed publicly.

The letter came during a period when Catherine has been gradually resuming public work following her cancer treatment — making the timing of the signature and cypher’s appearance all the more significant.

Why It Matters in Royal Protocol

Members of the British royal family seldom sign public documents — especially with a signature that could be forged — which is why hearing from them by name is rare.

For royals who marry into the family (like Catherine), tradition typically dictates using just a first name.

But even within those traditions, a public display of a personal cypher is unusual. It conveys a subtle assertion of identity — not as “Kate,” not as just a royal title, but as Catherine in her own right, carrying out duties and causes she supports.

Possible Interpretations

A nod to humility and authenticity. By signing “Catherine,” she could be signalling a more personal — and less formal — approach to her charitable work, especially on sensitive issues like addiction.

An assertion of her evolving role. As she returns to public duty, the cypher and signature may subtly mark her growth from a supporting royal figure to a senior royal with her own official “brand.”

A message of continuity and identity. The cypher connects Catherine to the tradition of monarchy while her signature underscores her individual voice, perhaps pointing to a carefully balanced new phase of public life.
