Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding day sparked ‘great regret’ for one royal
Prince William and Princess Kate’s wedding was a joyous occasion for royal enthusiasts nationwide. However, one senior royal, Sarah Ferguson, Prince William’s aunt, viewed the grand event with a more cynical perspective.
She was not invited to the Westminster Abbey ceremony where “ordinary” girl Kate became a full-fledged princess and future Queen of England. The spectacle seemed straight out of a fairytale, but for Fergie, whose own marriage ended in scandal and divorce, it stirred feelings of “great regret.”
She reminisced about her time as a young bride entering The Firm. Now 65, the Duchess of York had known her ex-husband Prince Andrew since childhood when they reportedly played tag together.
They were reintroduced as adults by her future sister-in-law Princess Diana, who correctly predicted their compatibility and suggested inviting the future duchess to a Royal Ascot party at Windsor Castle in summer 1985. A whirlwind romance followed, and in February 1986, Prince Andrew proposed at Floors Castle in Scotland.
