Kate Middleton’s mother Carole, was the mastermind behind her romance with Prince William: Report

While the most beloved couple in the United Kingdom may have had a fairytale romance, they were not spared by salacious rumours that their picture-perfect love story may not have been as organic as believed. While it is widely known that Prince William and Kate Middleton met in the halls of St Andrews, the sixth season of the Emmy Award-winning Netflix series ‘The Crown’ implied that their romance was not the usual meet-cute but orchestrated by Kate’s mother, Carole.

In Part 2 of ‘The Crown’s sixth season, the narrative strongly suggests that Carole Middleton, Kate’s mother, played a calculated role in shaping her daughter’s romance with Prince William. One episode portrays a tense moment where Kate confronts her mother, accusing her of influencing key life choices—such as taking a gap year and enrolling in courses rumored to attract the prince, as well as changing her university plans after William chose to attend St. Andrews.

While ‘The Crown’ is known for dramatizing real events, this implication of Carole’s involvement aligns with similar suggestions made in other accounts.

Tina Brown’s 2022 book, ‘The Palace Papers’, delves deeper into this narrative, presenting Carole Middleton as a highly ambitious and strategic figure. The book describes Carole as a “managerial mother” and a self-made millionaire by 30, whose determination and foresight played a pivotal role in her daughters’ lives. Brown writes, “It is unlikely Kate would be where she is today without her mother’s canny help in negotiating a royal romance.”

Kate’s education was carefully curated by her mother, starting with St. Andrew’s Prep School (not to be confused with the university) and later Marlborough College, known for producing well-connected and ambitious individuals. Brown notes that elite schools like Marlborough often mingled with institutions such as Eton, where Prince William studied. Interestingly, Kate reportedly saw William for the first time at a hockey match when she was nine, with some accounts suggesting she even attended a post-game tea.

Years later, as Kate prepared for university, Carole’s influence allegedly redirected her path. Initially accepted to Edinburgh University alongside her best friends, Kate withdrew at the last moment and reapplied to St. Andrews University after it was publicly announced that William would be enrolling there in 2000. According to Katie Nicholl’s book, Kate: The Future Queen, two of Kate’s former tutors confirmed Edinburgh had been her first choice.
