IS AMERICAN STILL THE LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD?

Published

on

Whether America is still the “leader of the free world” depends on what the phrase is taken to mean, since it is more a political shorthand than a formal title. Some people use it to describe the country that anchors alliances among liberal democracies and sets norms on security, trade, and human rights. Others treat it as a measure of legitimacy and example-setting, where leadership comes from consistency, restraint, and credibility rather than sheer power.

On several hard-power metrics, the United States remains central: it has unmatched global force projection, extensive intelligence and logistics networks, and deep alliance structures that many partners still rely on for deterrence and crisis response. Ongoing debates about NATO burden-sharing, support for Ukraine, and Indo-Pacific strategy show both how much leverage Washington retains and how much allied confidence depends on predictable commitments. In that sense, the US can still function as a hub, even when partners argue about the terms of that relationship.

At the same time, the claim to moral and political leadership is contested. Polarization at home, shifting foreign policy priorities between administrations, and disputes over trade, migration, and multilateral institutions can weaken perceptions of steadiness. Global surveys and public commentary in many countries suggest that approval of US leadership fluctuates sharply with events and with who is in the White House. The result is a mixed picture where the US remains a primary power centre, while “leader of the free world” is increasingly treated as a conditional role that has to be continuously earned.
