Erin Andrews’ reaction to Florida’s national championship win is blowing up online — a raw, real moment that captures the kind of joy you don’t fake. Monday night was a massive evening for Florida Gators fans, as the men’s basketball team captured its third national championship in San Antonio. The top-seeded Gators were able to take down another elite team in Houston to bring home the title.
Florida was one of the best teams in the country all season, and they persevered through a difficult game against the Cougars. After the game, one notable Florida alum expressed their happiness on social media.
“IF YOU AIN’T A GATOR, YOU MUST BE GATOR BAIT!!!!!!!!,” said Erin Andrews, who graduated from UF before beginning her broadcasting career.
Florida entered the tournament as a No. 1 seed, but the Gators were tested by difficult opposition. They defeated two-time defending champions UConn in the second round before taking down Maryland and Texas Tech to win their region.
After advancing to the Final Four, the Gators defeated Auburn as they had done in the regular season, advancing to Monday’s title game. Florida led for only 64 seconds on Monday, but it was enough time to emerge with the national championship.
Florida senior Walter Clayton Jr. was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after a string of great performances. Clayton averaged 22.3 points during this year’s March Madness, including back-to-back 30-point games in the Elite Eight and Final Four.
Houston’s defense was able to hold Clayton in check for most of the game on Monday night, but he made key plays down the stretch to keep Florida in the game. His defense on the final possession also helped force the decisive turnover, sealing the win and the national championship for the Gators.
The SEC was the best conference in college basketball this season, and it seems fitting that a team from the league would be this year’s national champion.
The Gators started a run of 12 straight wins with a victory over Texas A&M on March 1. That run ended on April 7 against another team from Texas, this time for the national title.
We’ll see what the future holds for Florida basketball after an impressive season and NCAA Tournament run, but it’s clear that Gator fans like Andrews and loving the national title run.
