Commanders Fans Boo Trump While He Swears In New U.S. Troops During ‘Salute To Service

A patriotic ceremony took an unexpected turn on Sunday when former President Donald Trump appeared at the Washington Commanders’ “Salute to Service” game to help swear in a group of new U.S. troops — only to be met with loud boos from sections of the crowd.

The moment unfolded at FedExField, where Trump was invited to take part in the annual NFL event honoring members of the Armed Forces. The “Salute to Service” tribute, held every November, recognizes active-duty soldiers, veterans, and their families.

Trump, wearing a dark overcoat and an American flag pin, walked onto the field as the announcer introduced him to the crowd. But almost immediately, mixed reactions erupted — with cheers from some, but noticeable boos echoing from others across the stands.

Despite the chilly reception, Trump carried on with the ceremony, reading the oath of enlistment to a formation of new recruits standing proudly on the 50-yard line. Cameras captured him raising his right hand as thousands of fans watched from the stands.

> “You are the heart and soul of this nation,” Trump said in his brief address. “America is strong because of people like you who choose to serve.”

The atmosphere, however, remained divided. Some attendees stood and applauded, while others jeered, with chants breaking out in parts of the stadium. The reaction quickly spread across social media, where clips of the moment went viral — sparking a firestorm of debate.

A Divided Moment at a Patriotic Event

Analysts called the incident a reflection of the polarized political climate. While Trump’s supporters praised his participation as a show of respect for the military, critics argued that the event was not the right platform for a politically charged appearance.

> “It’s a reminder that even moments meant for unity can reveal how divided America still is,” noted one commentator on X (formerly Twitter).

The NFL and the Washington Commanders released no official statement about Trump’s attendance, though organizers confirmed he was invited as a former commander-in-chief to honor the troops.

After the ceremony, Trump waved briefly to the crowd before exiting the field, as the recruits — now newly sworn-in soldiers — received a standing ovation of their own.

Whatever one’s politics, the moment captured something unmistakably American: the power, the pride, and the deep divisions that continue to shape the national stage.
