Senator Marco Rubio said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should apologize to Donald Trump and questioned whether Zelensky genuinely wants peace following their disastrous meeting.

The confrontation unfolded inside the Oval Office on Friday and quickly spiraled out of control after Trump took offense at how Zelensky treated Vice President JD Vance in front of the cameras.

Rubio Blames Zelensky for the Tension

In an attempt to shift blame away from Trump and Vance—whose aggressive stance has drawn criticism even from the U.S.’s closest allies—Rubio suggested that Zelensky’s behavior leading up to the meeting was unacceptable.

“You guys only saw the end, but you didn’t see everything that led up to it,” Rubio said. “The president has been very clear—he campaigned on this. He believes this war should have never started, and I agree that if he had been president, it wouldn’t have happened.”

Rubio emphasized that Trump is focused on ending the war through diplomacy. “We want to get Russia to the negotiating table and explore whether peace is possible,” he said.

He also argued that the heated exchange was a “predictable outcome” given the events of the past ten days, stating, “Apologize for turning this into the fiasco that it became. Don’t come here and start lecturing us about how diplomacy won’t work.”

Doubts About Zelensky’s Intentions

Rubio went even further, speculating that Zelensky might not actually want a peace deal.

“Maybe Zelensky doesn’t want peace. That kind of open undermining is deeply frustrating for everyone involved. He should apologize for wasting our time,” Rubio said.

Vance then criticized previous Democratic administrations for failing to stop Russia, while Zelensky attempted to refocus the conversation on Putin.

“He killed people,” Zelensky stated.

Vance, visibly frustrated, responded, “I’m talking about diplomacy that will end the destruction of your country, Mr. President. With respect, I think it’s disrespectful for you to come to the Oval Office and try to litigate this in front of the American media.”

Zelensky then challenged Vance: “Have you ever been to Ukraine? Do you see the problems we have?”

Vance fired back, “I’ve seen the stories. And I know what happens—you bring people on a propaganda tour, Mr. President.”

Trump jumped in to defend his vice president, telling Zelensky, “You’re in a bad position. You don’t have the cards right now.”

“I’m not playing cards,” Zelensky retorted.

At one point, Vance snapped, “Have you said thank you once?”

“I said it a lot of times,” Zelensky replied.

Zelensky Responds: No Apology, Wants Trump to Be ‘More on Our Side’

Speaking to Fox News after the dramatic confrontation, Zelensky was asked directly whether he owed Trump an apology. He dodged the question twice before firmly refusing.

“I’m not sure we did anything wrong,” he said.

However, he did express gratitude for U.S. support: “We’re thankful to Americans, you helped us survive. I’m thankful to President Trump and to Congress for their bipartisan support. We are strategic partners.”

Zelensky also pushed back against Trump’s claim that he wants a war. “No, first of all, we want peace. That’s why we are in the U.S. The minerals deal is the first step to security guarantees and getting closer to peace,” he said.

He added, “I want President Trump to be more on our side. Trump said he will stop the war, and I hope he will. We need to pressure him with Europe.”

When asked if his relationship with Trump was repairable, Zelensky remained optimistic.

“Yes, of course,” he said. “Because this is more than just a relationship between two presidents. It’s a strong relationship between our people, and that’s why I always thank your people on behalf of ours.”
