At least four people were stabbed near Washington, D.C Sunday, according to authorities, who added that shots were fired on I-495 and a suspect has been apprehended.
Emergency personnel responded to reports of a car crash and stabbing on the freeway, according to officials.
Currently, traffic is being rerouted onto Route 29/Route 50 at Exit 50a. The Virginia Department of Transportation reported that the event initially started as a car accident, after which a suspect began attacking and stabbing individuals who had either stopped to help or were involved in the initial crash. Emergency personnel and injured people were visible on the road in the video. Two victims were categorized as “red tag,” signifying critical injuries, while one victim was receiving CPR. A fourth victim had a “yellow tag,” indicating that their injuries were severe but not immediately life-threatening.
The suspect’s condition is unknown.
Matthew Demlein, a spokesman for the Virginia State Police, stated that while he was attempting to get more details, he was unable to corroborate any information regarding the Sunday afternoon event.
Numerous independent news outlets, such as The DMV Live on X, stated that state police had fired rounds and that several people had been stabbed. The investigation is being led by Fairfax County Police, with assistance from Virginia State Police in areas pertaining to highways.
A routine departmental review will be conducted on the officer-involved shooting. No motive has been found by investigators, and no connections to terrorism or more general geopolitical events have been proven.
This comes just two days after Virginia police arrested a suspect in the murder of Stephanie Minter, 41, who was knifed to death at a bus stop Friday.
Officers discovered Minter with upper body stab wounds, and they declared her dead at the scene, according to the police.
